January began with the kids back to school. Norm also is hitting the books for the second year of his electrician’s apprenticeship course in Victoria. Since Harmac canceled his apprenticeship in December, he is now back in the steam plant, but decided to continue his course, paying his own way and working in Nanaimo while attending classes in Victoria. How is this possible, you ask? I’m not sure, but he is managing so far. The classes are pretty easy right now so he has been able to miss a few in order to catch up on some important sleep time. The other question you are asking – have I found work yet? No, but I am applying at places that will pay more than $8/hour. So far, no luck, but the search continues.
For us, January also brings a change in our international students. It’s always a difficult time. We are excited about receiving a new student but are very sad to have to say goodbye to our current ones. At the end of January, both Nivaldo and Paul will be leaving us. Paul has been with us since September, and Nivaldo has been in our home since February 2006, with a break for the summer. It will be hard to let them go, but we know they will be a part of our family always. On January 31, we will welcome Renato into our home. He is from Uberaba, Minas Gerais, Brazil, about 900 km northwest of Rio de Janeiro.
Also at the end of January, Lucas will compete in the Lynn Hetherington Competition in Duncan. This is a qualifying competition, meaning that if places well he will be in the provincials on Kamloops in March. He and Kanon have already been assured a place there to perform their pairs routine, so we are pretty excited about their first “important” competition. Does anybody have any plans to travel to Kamloops on March 6th? Lucas would appreciate the extra support. We will also be celebrating Lucas’ 12th birthday then.
That’s it for January news. I am going to spend the rest of this rare, sunny day scouring the help-wanted ads.
